The university takes its name from the 14th century Turris Virgatae farmhouse, owned by the noble Roman Annibaldi family, located below Villa Gentile on the campus. The University of Rome Tor Vergata, founded in 1982, is a public university located half an hour from the center of Rome.

The University of Rome Tor Vergata has 18 faculties, 6 libraries, 106 undergraduate, graduate students, one bachelor's degree, and 31 doctoral programs. The university has many international agreements. Over 500 bilateral and cultural agreements. Among these agreements are Brazilian universities, Oxford and Harvard.

The university has 27 research centers. Moreover, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) opened in Tor Vergata in 2012.
